World War II, Korea and Vietnam Elko, Elko County, Nevada
The information for this page was taken from a book compiled by Steve Hernandez for the Elko Gasper J. Salaz Post 2350 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elko, Nevada. Mr. Jack Williams is credited for coming up with the idea for the monument. He presented this dream at a Post meeting on September 14, 1989. Committee members John Aldaya, Tom Stringfield and Steve Hernandez together with Jack Williams were selected at the meeting to initiate the project. During the next year, "local artist Sarah Sweetwater was commissioned to design an appropriate memorial. Her creative visions are expressed in the monument which creates several "V" figures (for Victory) and the tallest stone points to our flag. The 9 ton Georgia granite monument was erected by the Salt Lake Monument Company." The monument was dedicated on July 4, 1991. The names of the soldiers honored by this monument can be located on the Lest We Forget page.
