Sherman
Station
&
Their Neighbors
Huntington
Valley
Elko
County, Nevada
A couple
of months ago I was talking with my neighbor, Doug Thomsen, who works at Bald Mountain
Mine, about when Harry and I visited the Sadler Ranch.
He said, 'You know that Sherman Station [the two story log cabin that was
moved to Elko in 1997 to house the Chamber of Commerce] was located in
Huntington Valley - not far from the Sadler Ranch.' Earlier this month,
as I was taking a photo of Sherman Station in the Elko
city park, this conversation rekindled in my mind. Indeed, the
original location of Sherman Station was just south and a tad east of the
Sadler Ranch. It is right on the Elko - White Pine County line, on the
Elko side. Anyway the original location of Sherman Station and some
photographs of their neighbor's ranch houses, that still remain in Huntington
Valley, is the subject of this page.

Elko
Chamber of Commerce
Sherman
Station
The Elko
Chamber of Commerce was established in 1917. It was previously
located in an old well building at the museum. In 1999 the
chamber relocated to the Sherman Station. These five log
structures were built around 1902 and relocated to Elko in 1997. The
turn-of-the-century main house, the largest log cabin in Nevada, is
now the headquarters for the Elko Chamber of Commerce. It is
open to the public and offers guided tours and a self-guided
historical pictorial tour. |

| SHERMAN
(Walther's) Photos
Valentine Walther and his wife, Sophie, homesteaded along Sherman
Creek in January, 1876. Sherman served as a stop on the stageline
heading south to Hamilton for many years. The Walthers provided meals
and overnight lodging. Walther had one of the best orchards in Nevada
and raised cherries, plums, apricots, and apples. In 1902, Walther and
Nick Scott began building a huge two-story log home, made of 18"
logs. The structure was and is one of the most impressive ever built in
Elko County. The ranch is still active although the old two story log
house was moved to Elko in the late 1990s to serve as an office for the
chamber of commerce. The original log school house still stands as do a
few other old buildings. Sherman is located behind a private gate.
