Abandoned Ranch - South Fork Humboldt River Elko County, Nevada
I know very little of the history of this ranch. In 1991, when I first saw this ranch it was abandoned but still standing. Since then, it has burned down. It is assumed due to the range fires that have recently destroyed many of the historical wooden structures in this part of the state. It is located along the east bank of the South Fork Humboldt River about two miles south of the mouth of the Canyon. The Donner Party camped near this ranch on Friday, September 25, 1846. The location here is marked Area 2, as this page ties in with the web page Wagons Ho! . The Wagons Ho! web page details the route taken by the Donner Party, on the Hastings Cutoff along the South Fork Humboldt River (from Huntington Creek to the Humboldt River - where the Hastings Cutoff Trail rejoined the California Trail.) The ranch is located along the Bullion road. This road was used to transport supplies from Elko to the old mining town of Bullion.

Friday, September 25, 1846 (based on mileage I am assuming near Area 2) "Frid 25 September This day we made about Sixteen miles 16 for Six miles a very rough Cannon a perfect Snake trail encamped in the Cannon about 2 miles from its mout" [This camp was in the canyon of the South Fork of the Humboldt, southwest of present Elko, Nevada.] |
