Reno
Municipal Rose Garden
Dedicated To Fred Gallaway, Founder
On
July 12, 2001, I visited the Reno Municipal Rose Garden, Idlewilde Park,
beside the Truckee River, near downtown Reno, Nevada. It was midsummer,
so the roses were not at their peak. But the garden was still
beautiful. I have visited this garden since
the late eighties. When my wife had surgery at St. Mary's Hospital in
the early '90s, I would wander around and look at the roses. It
brought me comfort. Reno (Zone
7) is in the rain-shadow of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and has a much milder climate than Elko (Zone
5). Many Hybrid Tea roses do much better here than in Elko. On the other
hand, I have been told, that an especially hard winter can bring a
heavy-hearted gardener to their knees. This garden predominantly consists of modern and
climber roses. Unfortunately, I can find no official web-site on this garden to refer you to
- for more information. If you know of one, please let me know and I will
link this page to it. I visited the
garden at about 6:30am and then again in the late afternoon. A number of the photos
show water droplets on the roses. This is not for ascetic reasons.
I just played dodge the sprinkler in the morning. Then at about
8 o'clock they began to mow. A few of the roses are sprinkled with grass
clippings. Let me assure you that they stick extraordinarily well to a
damp blossom. Because of the midsummer timing, most of the photos do not
make good wallpaper. They were taken primarily for identification and
enjoyment purposes. Those that have especially nice blossoms are noted by the rose
name. The rose names were obtained from labels by the roses.
Though as most gardeners know, labels are wanderers - they must have feet of clay. I have verified
that the rose names shown here are correct. If you find one that isn't -
let me know. There are
many more roses in the garden than those pictured here. These were just
in bloom at the time of my visit. Lastly, the rose names are linked to
the extraordinary "Help Me
Find Roses" site. There you can find more information about the
roses and perhaps where they can be obtained in commerce. Enough
with the words, let's go enjoy the roses.
