The Proposal

The Roses were red

His feelings ran true

His hands were a shakin'

The ring was brand new.

He started out deliberate and slow

His voice trembled at first

Then it came out like a speech

that he'd often rehearsed.

"Ya know I ain't much of a catch

Even though money I've got

I was wild in my youth

Even a bit of a sot."

She listened politely

She gave him his due

As he continued

For another minute or two.

Lastly he said,  "If you say no

I suspect I might as well die"

He paused for a moment

As she took on her reply.

"Darlin' I like you

You like to dance and drink

But as my husband

I think you'd stink."

"So let's go out

Celebrate life and have some fun

Save your ring

For another one."

He grinned and asked,

"Can ya be my friend?"

She winked and said,

"Until the bitter end."
