& Crime Statistics: In
1998, 670,500 victims of serious violent crimes (rape and sexual
assault, robbery, and aggravated assault) stated that they faced an
offender with a firearm. Victimization
involving a firearm represented 23% of the 2.9 million violent
crimes of rape and sexual assault, robbery, and aggravated assault. The
FBI's Crime in the United States estimated that 65% of the 16,914
murders in 1998 were committed with firearms. Weapon
arrestees are predominantly male, age 18 or over, and white.
However, weapons arrest rates per 100,000 population are highest for
teens and for blacks. According
to the 1991 Survey of State Prison inmates, among those inmates who
possessed a handgun, 9% had acquired it through theft, and 28% had
acquired it through an illegal market such as a drug dealer or
fence, 10% had stolen at least one gun, and 11% had sold or traded
stolen guns. Traffic
Crashes, Injuries and Fatalities - 1997: The
number of police-reported traffic crashes is estimated at 6,753,500
for 1997. This represents a small (1.3%) decrease over
1996. The number of injuries in these crashes is estimated at
3,450,000, which is 1.7% lower relative to 1996. An
estimated 12,088,470 drivers were involved in police reported
crashes in 1997, a decrease of about 1.1% from 1996. About
2,182,660 drivers suffered some type of injury and an additional 24,860
were fatally injured, a 2.3% decrease over 1996 for the number of
driver injuries and a 1.3% increase for the number of driver
fatalities. The
number of passengers injured in traffic crashes is estimated at
1,125,890, a very small increase over 1996. The number of
passengers that died in motor vehicle crashes is estimated at
11,040. About
76,550 pedestrians were injured in crashes during 1997. The
number of pedestrians killed in 1997 was 5,300. The
number of pedal-cyclists injured in 1997 is estimated at
64,900. The estimated 800 pedal-cyclist fatalities for 1997 is
5% higher than 1996. Federal
