A Heartless Man

About three years ago, we used a local gentleman to repair clocks.

He was a nice guy, did good work, and had few, if - any, self-inflicted, problems.  I've lost track of him now.  The last I heard, he was a city councilman for a smaller town in Nevada and owned several service businesses.  Unexpectedly, his brother had a heart attack and died.  He called to let me know that he would be gone for about a week and please explain to any customer that he was sorry for the delay.  Everyone was understanding, except one man, whom I now dedicate this story.  When he came in to check on his clock, I explained the situation to him.  To which he replied, 'I don't care about him, his problems or if his brother did die - I just want my clock fixed and I want it fixed NOW'.  The rest of this very true story is rather anticlimactic.  He got his clock back two weeks later, repaired, at a reduced cost, with a perfunctory apology.  To the point, at the time I thought, "Today, I have met a heartless man".

A Heartless Man

To be truthful,

I can't really feel your pain.

And, I'm not sure I even want to.

To be honest, I'm not sure, I even like you.

I would truly appreciate it -

if you wouldn't ruin my day.

  Take your mopping face,

 your teary eyes

 and get away from me.

  My life is short

and I'm a busy, important guy.

I have no time for losers like you.

Take your petty problems

to someone who is paid to listen.

A minister, doctor or your barber -

anyone but me.

We truly are here for a relatively short time.  Compassion, and a bit of understanding is a good thing.  If you don't know what to say, when someone presents an unfathomable problem to you ... you need not try to solve it - there is a good chance you can't.  You need not even need to try to 'make' them feel better - there is a good chance you can't.  But you can listen, be sincere, compassionate and a bit thoughtful - there is a good chance you can.

this reminds me of the song Hard Hearted Hannah

A Truthful Man

Sanctimonious strains

of holier than thou.

Rattles thru my brain

as a tired, endless refrain.

Was the purpose of this -

to impress the idle mind?

With the elegance of style?

If so - you must be - truly in denial.

A common thread, simple words

from deep within the heart?

Set down to help you comprehend?

Well, your ignorance is difficult to defend.

Who set you up to be -

the conscious of our time?

Was your goal just to entertain?

Or is it ambitious men that you distain?

Whatever your goal.

Whatever your merit.

Since you wasted your time.

You could, at least, have made it rhyme!
