Eureka County, Nevada
Harney, Nevada, United States [Place] is in Eureka County; location is 40°34'39"N 116°19'26"W; elevation is 4,774 feet
East of Beowawe, along the Humboldt River, and along the west-bound railroad tracks is the abandoned ghost town of Harney. It is marked with some foundations, an old well and hundreds of rusty tin cans. Judging by the pits dug around the town - the area has been well scavenged by collectors. But I collect history, not cans or bottles, and there is lots of that left here. However, in this case it seems to be a little more difficult to uncover. North of Harney, across the Humboldt River, is another abandoned rail siding named Cluro. Time didn't permit walking over there. We will save it for another page someday ... Just about a mile up-stream from Harney was the location of the 1939 City of San Francisco train wreck. At this point I know very little about Harney. My guess is that it was a siding and housing area for a section gang for railroad maintenance. Harney is a fairly common family name. I am assuming it was named for someone. Whom I don't know. If you would like to add anything to this page please let me know.
