Greenhorn
Cutoff
1849
Just
past Carlin Canyon, about 2 miles east of
Carlin is an old diatomite mining operation.
While visiting the mine area, I saw a green grassy area in the distance.
Heading over to see what it was, I noticed the "Trails West" trail
markers shown below. The grassy area turned out to be a "Hot
Sulphur Spring" with lots of dark green bunch grass and the trail markers
showed the location of the "Greenhorn Cutoff". The
"Hot Sulphur Springs" have a recorded water temperature of 147º F
(see links below). The area was pretty, historical and interesting, so I
will share it with you now.

WE STRUCK THE BRANCH (SUSIE CREEK). THE ROAD TURNS SOUTHWEST,
WHICH CARRIED US BACK ALMOST TOWARDS OUR STARTING POINT THIS
MORNING. WE ROLLED DOWN THIS ... WHERE WE AGAIN STRUCK THE
RIVER." WAKENAN BRYARLY, JUL 27, 1849 |

Photo is of trail by marker. Susie Creek is just
over the fence in the sagebrush. Carlin is in the distance along
the base of the distance mountain. |

The
dated entry below is from the diary of Hiram Miller and James F. Reed.
This
information is COPIED DIRECTLY from the linked Donner Party Site.
Make sure you check-out Daniel
M. Rosen's site it is great!
The Donner party passed through Carlin Canyon on:
Sunday,
September 27, 1846
"Marys River, Son 27 Came through a Short
Cannon and encamped above the first Creek (after the Cannon) on Marys
River" [This camp was probably on present Susie Creek, also
called Moleen Canyon, below Carlin, Nevada.]
But the Donner Party didn't take the Greenhorn
Cutoff. They stayed the course on the Humboldt River till
Carlin. There they headed toward Emigrant Pass instead of
through Palisade. |
