Fort Ruby, Ruby Valley

White Pine County, Nevada

1862 - 1869

Fort Ruby is on the main drag through Ruby Valley, four miles south of the Elko - White Pine County line and eight miles south of the Gallagher Fish Hatchery.  I really didn't do enough homework before visiting this area.  For one thing, I missed the graves just north of the fort. Also couldn't locate the original sites of the fort's buildings.  I will try to return to this area before the snow flies this year.  So watch this page for an up-date.

Fort Ruby: (Ruby Valley in northern White Pine County) Established in 1862 by Colonel Edward P. Connor with 600 men who marched all the way from Stockton, California. A reservation of six square miles was laid out and given the name Camp Ruby. Its name came from the nearby mountains where pioneers found "rubies" and "ruby sand," actually garnets, in the gravel of the streams.

 I enjoyed this!!

Fort Ruby, Ruby Valley, Nevada

The photo below shows "what is believed to be the original cabin that "Uncle" Billy Rogers is thought to have erected on the Fort Ruby site just a few yards to the south of the Fort Ruby Spring. Some say it was built in 1859, while others say it was built when the Fort was established in 1862. Whatever the correct date or whoever built it, the fact remains that it is one of the oldest, if not the oldest structure left in Ruby Valley."
