Thomas D. Driskell

Died:  August 25, 1996

Age:  30 years

Elko County, Nevada

Along the side of the Mountain City Highway (Highway 51), near the turnoff to Dorsey Reservoir, on a small rise alongside the southbound lane, is a white cross monument to Thomas D. Driskell.  Tom died here at 6:30 Sunday morning on August 25, 1996.  He was headed north when the vehicle drifted off the road and he overcorrected, causing it to skid, then roll several times.  This is too common of occurrence in northeastern Nevada.  Long, narrow roads, trying to avoid a cow, deer, antelope or whatever on the road.  Or just drifting off to sleep while driving.  The present reason - I may never know.  But I did stop and look at the cross marker beside the road, looked at the photos, read Hannah's Christmas poem, looked at the dream catchers and realized Tom must have been truly loved.    If you wish to add more ... just let me know.

Sunday Morning

(Dedicated to Tom Driskell)

Headed down Nevada highway

going about 65.

Which is about as fast

as this old truck can drive.

Left before the robin's song.

Headed north on Highway 51.

Sipp'n coffee from a cup,

in the first rays of the morning sun.

Passed through the Carlin tunnels.

Left most of Elko still in bed.

Up and over Adobe Summit.

Dinner Station's just ahead.

Thinking about my family

and the ones I love.

Music on the radio is startin' to fade away.

What's that - soaring up above?

It's got to be the prettiest bird

that I have ever seen.

Looks to be a pure, white dove

like something from a dream ...
