Mr. Robert Stokes of Greenlee County, Arizona will become Elko County's new
Manager in 2001. See article in Elko
Daily Free Press.
Mr.
George Boucher, is the retiring County Manager. George has been County
Manager and worked in county service for the past 27 years. I have always
said there are two kinds of people. Those who are an asset to the
community and those who are an ass in the community. I cannot say enough
good about Mr. Boucher. He forms the definition for the word Asset -
with a capital A. In my opinion, and most other folk here in town, he can
be compared to the gold mined from the county. He is a local treasure.

BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, COUNTY OF ELKO
Regular Session
THURSDAY,
NOVEMBER 2, 2000
ROSE GARDEN - COUNTY ADMINISTRATION BUILDING:
The Board considered the proposal to place a plaque/sign in
the Rose Garden area behind the County Administration Building noting the
efforts of Dan Turner who planted and nurtured the roses this past year.
The board members commented upon the campaign speeches utilizing the issue.
MOTION: Commissioner Lloyd moved that Commissioner
Skelton commission someone to make a sign, plaque or whatever in commemoration
of Mr. Turner's efforts. Commissioner Roberts seconded the motion.
The motion was passed unanimously.
Commissioner Roberts noted of all the serious items before the
County, he never considered the Rose garden as being a political issue..

Letter

10/15/00
Added
the remaining 29 labels to the roses in the garden. All of the roses have
now been marked. Two markers need to be replaced, as they were
taken. Mr. & Mrs. Potts are high on the suspect list, again!
Added
1 small handful of Muriate of Potash (0-0-60) around the drip line of each
rose. Normally, I like to have this done by late-August or
early-September. But I'm late this year. This helps the roses winter
better, produces strong sturdy stalks and colorful blooms next spring.

Very
kind article about the Elko County Rose Garden written in the Elko Chamber of
Commerce Monthly Newsletter. Thank you. Thank you very much.

Two
of the three entries in the fair won First Place Premium Blue Ribbons. One
was for a bouquet of Chorale and the other for a Display of Roses from the ECRG.
The 'Princess Verona Sport (?)' must have been a bit too strange for the judges
- it did not place. The Elko Garden Club did an outstanding job in
managing all of the entries in the Garden Show. There were a large number
beautiful entries of many types of flowers in the show. I would think it
must have been very difficult for the judges to decide among so many choices.
9/1/00
Entered
three displays of roses from the Elko County Rose Garden in the Elko County Fair

Rose
Garden - Year 2:
The Board considered the request from Dan Turner to receive
"Authorization to Proceed" with the Year 2 Garden Design
on lands behind the County Administration Building. Commissioner
Lesperance cautioned there should be a limit to the number of rose
bushes. Commissioner Lloyd warned that there would be a sidewalk
installed in the future. Commissioner Skelton noted there was
parking in one of the regions. Commissioner Roberts suggested Mr.
Turner postpone phase two.
Motion:
Commissioner Roberts moved to postpone the request from Dan Turner to
proceed with the Year 2 Garden Design on land behind the County
Administration Building until the sidewalk was completed.
Commissioner Lesperance seconded the motion.
Commissioner
Roberts inquired who would inherit the care of the roses.
The
motion was passed unanimously. |
| "Mr. Turner:
The Board of
Commissioners voted not to approve Year 2 of the Elko County Rose
Garden at this time due to the fact that the entire sidewalk area of
the Administration building will be torn out this fall or next spring
as well as the fact that a new irrigation system will be put in to
correspond with the concrete work. They felt that the new roses
to be planted would be disturbed or would be in the way of this
renovation. They did say that there would be no problem
with you approaching the Board with the proposal next year at this
time.
| Sincerely, Julie
Wynne" e-mail:
