The Nevada Youth Training Center  (NYTC) is in Elko, Nevada.  It is a State run training center for boys 12 or so to 18 years of age who the courts have determined could use some extra training in life skills and schooling.  It is a good program.  I am proud to be associated with it.  This poem is about Mr. Dave Wilcox, a supervisor at NYTC.  His picture, without his ubiquitous cowboy hat and boots, can be seen the bottom of the Falcon Fire Crew Web-page.

The Legend of Dave Wilcox

Mightily he fell upon the earth

Cracked the sidewalk with his girth

Broke three ribs and wounded his pride

I hear tell later - he dang near died.

But this ole cowboy must be tough

'Cause he said it tweren't enough

He'd go ahead and work his shift

But we all noticed his gait was stiff.

He got up and headed down to Pioneer

Said the walk helped a bit - fer his head to clear

But as he entered the dorm he didn't look good

Hold'n his side - face scrunched up - more'n it should.

He strode to the desk and looked around

Then said - "Might be best not to sit down."

Then he yelled, "You're all gett'n too loud and who's that sing'n?"

But we all knew - musta jest be his ears a ring'n.

Well, to make the story short he worked that day

Though they say he oft bent his head - as if to pray

Well that day, the legend of the man increased a bit

But we're just glad he's doin' better and it don't hurt to sit.

Now we can all go do what we all do best

Go fight fires with all the rest

But, Mr. Wilcox, if you trip - do it with class

'Cause we don't want ya - to burn yer ...
