On
July 14, 2002, we visited Currie Nevada. Earlier this year, I had read
the Spring 1975, Northeastern Nevada Historical Society Quarterly (available
at the Northeastern
Nevada Museum). It contained a
wonderful article entitled "Memories of Currie, Nevada" by Anna
Leona Reynolds. After the visit I returned to the museum and looked
through their historic photograph collection on Currie. Thanks to a lot
of people, there are about 70 historic photographs of Currie and some of the
ranches around Currie. Through the generosity of the Northeastern Nevada
Museum, I am including a few of these photographs. These were the
boom years of Currie. Most of these photos have some descriptions on the
back. The descriptions are included here. Unfortunately many of
the photos were not dated. The museum photo numbers are given for each
photo.

Hotel
The middle
photo is the car most likely described in Mrs. Reynold's
article. Because it is a great story I will quote it here:
"Billy
Graham and his wife stopped in Currie - in their brand new
Buick. They were autoing from McGill to Wells. Theirs was
the first automobile we had seen and everyone was out in the street
looking it over. He sat in the front, she in the back in a tied
veil. Graham sped away from Currie but ran into a herd of cattle 20
miles this side of Wells in Clover Valley. He hit a cow and set
her in the back with Mrs. Graham and tore the whole top of the car
off. She went on to Wells on the mail stage and then home on the
train.
Graham came
back to Currie, topless and discouraged. Earl [Mrs. Reynolds
husband] bought the Buick for $250 and Graham took the train home.
Henry Phalan
and Earl had many days of fun working on that car and Mrs. Phalan and
I had many days of washing greasy and oily clothes."

| Schools
In the article "Memories of Currie, Nevada" by Anna
Leona Reynoldsis the following description of the old school (first photo):
"My husband wrote to Carson City and was told that 11 children
were enough to have a school ..."
The state sent men to build a school not far from the Phalan
place. We could not, by hook or crook, get but nine children, so
we imported an Indian, his wife and two children. That made the
11 needed..."
"The new building turned out to be our civic center for all
dances, parties and election boards. When we had any of these
events we just moved the desks out. It was lovely - a nice
building and furnishings for those days."

The lower left photo is of Bill
and Louise Lear. I was told it was taken shortly after their
marriage. What a wonderful photo. It brings a smile to my
face.
The building in the lower right
photo remains and is shown on the recent photos
page.
