Elko County Rose Garden

Elko, Nevada

2002 - Year Of The Rose

Release for Elko Press

2002 is the YEAR OF THE ROSE!  The American Rose Society is leading an effort to celebrate the rose in 2002.  The year long, world-wide, grassroots event has been made official by a resolution of the US CongressThe 2002 Year of the Rose campaign has been initiated to focus more attention on rose growing in America and around the world.   As part of  this campaign, on September 19, 2001, Dan and Dorothy Turner, Elko Rose Garden Association, were notified that The American Rose Society has designated Elko, Nevada as an American Rose City.  Elko received this award because of its dedication to roses through the Elko County Rose Garden  (behind the County Administration Building), the Horizon Hospice Rose Garden (in the main city park) and private rose gardens.  Elko also has a website http://www.elkorose.com that is dedicated to providing information on more than 500 winter-hardy roses that can be successfully grown in Elko's challenging climate with little or no winter care.  The site also contains locally written poems and many interesting and historical places to visit in northeastern Nevada.  For us in Elko, having been designated as an American Rose City brings significant, very positive, world attention to Elko, Nevada.  Because Elko has been designated as an American Rose City, our town has been included on the Year of the Rose website on the AMERICAN ROSE CITIES PAGE (http://www.rose-2002.org/cities.html). The Elko Rose Garden Association is also listed on the Year of the Rose website on the LOCAL ROSE SOCIETIES PAGE  (http://www.rose-2002.org/societies.html). Elko will also be listed in written publications by the American Rose Society.  The Elko County Rose Garden has been listed on the "Garden Tours, Public Gardens and Private Collections with Roses"  (http://www.ars.org/links/tourpgs.html) on The American Rose Society's website, since 2000.   The American Rose Society, contains 22,000 members, has 380 affiliate societies, and 34-member societies around the world.  Since the Elko Rose Garden website was started in March 2000, it has had 23,000 visitors from 49 different countries.
